Miasto nad Odrą

Szczecin, the capital of the Western Pomerania Province, is a big city situated farthest in the North-West of Poland. The surface area of the Szczecin City is equal to 300.8 km and it is inhabited by 415 thousand of people. It is situated on both banks of the Odra River, at a 65 km distance from the Baltic Sea, and it forms, together with Swinoujscie, an energetically acting sea port complex. It is here that the transit roads joining the Western Europe with Baltic Sea countries and the Scandinavia with the South of Europe are crossing.

Szczecin exerts a very great impact on the whole historical Pomerania and Brandenburgia, being an important centre of political, social and cultural co-operation between local governments of Poland, Germany and Scandinavia. Szczecin is the biggest Polish City located in vicinity of three countries: Germany, Denmark and Sweden, occupying unquestionable leading position in the Pomerania Euroregion in the Polish-German border and cross-border area.

It is the proximity of Berlin, being at present the most dynamically developing metropolis of Europe, that has got particular importance for Szczecin. Taking advantage of its values, Szczecin may become a complementary city for the capital of Germany in development of many functions of city-creating character. In view of such conditions, a decision has been made on locating the NATO Multinational Corps HQ North-East as well as the Danish- German-Polish support unit in Szczecin. Szczecin is a very important transport junction - both in national and European scale. One should not leave out of account the importance of Szczecin location on the route of the transport corridor North-South connecting the southern Scandinavia - via Swinoujscie, Szczecin, Odra Route, Czech Republic, Austria - with Mediterranean Sea ports. Advantageous geographical location at the crossing of all kinds of transport routes, and first of all - presence of seaports, predestine the City to the role of transport logistic centre. Szczecin is one of several cities in Poland that are linked with the motorway system of the Western Europe, including motorway A6 to Berlin and road no. 3 to the South of Europe.

At about 45 km distance from Szczecin (in Goleniow) the airport is located, servicing air voyages (flights) on national and international lines. An essential factor of Szczecin attractiveness are its particular natural environment conditions and values, constituting an enormous potential of economic, tourist and cultural development of the region. Szczecin is distinguished by abundance of surface and underground waters (c.a. 16 lakes and ponds, including the Da.bie Lake and overflow arms of the Odra River for lovers of aquatics and water sports, as well as the Szczecin Lagoon).
