The National Museum in Szczecin is pleased to invite you to the opening of an exhibition presenting fragments of Szczecin’s history from the archaeological perspective – “Civitas et urbs Stetinum. Chapters from the history of the northern part of the city.”

For a long time, the history of Szczecin has been the subject of scholarly research. Some fifty years ago the most important were written accounts, while currently the role of archaeological materials is becoming increasingly important. The need for collecting and caring for material evidence of the days of yore was recognised in the 1st half of the 19th century.

This crucial importance of archaeology in the City’s history was evidenced in the establishment of the Szczecin History Museum Department at the National Museum in Szczecin. The Department presents the City’s history from early Middle Ages to contemporary times, illustrating it with excavated items.

Excavation works have been conducted in the Old Town for several dozen years now. They are the first step towards reconstructing Szczecin’s history from the archaeological perspective. Until now, only the early mediaeval period has been presented in such a way. Because of the size of the collection gathered by the Archaeological Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, a project was launched to systematically prepare and publish the results of archaeological surveys conducted in the subsequent parts of the Old Town. It is entitled “Civitas et urbs Szczecin. From the Middle Ages to the Present Times.”

Quarter I, located in the north-eastern part of the present-day Podzamcze district, on the Oder River, was selected as the first area for comprehensive studies.

The “Chapters from the history of the northern part of the city” exhibition illustrates selected issues from the rich subject-matter of the project. The exhibition presents the personal effects (Res propriae) of citizens, a unique early-mediaeval shield discovered between the structures of the early-mediaeval rampant (Arma et gloria), household appliances (Res domesticae), kitchen and dining-room accessories (Apud mensam) and items illustrating townsfolk’s work (Labor cotidianus). A publication accompanying the exhibition presents the results of studies on the discussed issues, important to the city.
