The City bathed in greenery

The development of Szczecin’s greenery is inseparably connected with city’s history. From the middle of XIX century.
Szczecin from the city of fortress was becoming the city of expanding its borders fast. Necessity of city extension was an ideal occasion for designing the city not only as a strictly urban object, but also as a centre with great amount of city’s greenery. A similar tendency has been observed in whole Europe, where the idea of “city-garden” has been developed.
Creation of green areas for such a scale wouldn’t be possible, if not the generosity of industrialists of that time, native Szczecinians, who didn’t regret money for adorning Szczecin with the whole parks complexes. The most known among them is a trade advisor Martin Quistorp, the owner of many factories and thousands of hectares of land situated around the city. This is him who initiated come into being present Pogodno as a residential area. But the most famous works, which arose without the support of Quistorp wouldn’t be possible, it is the biggest Szczecin’s park called Kasprowicza Park and Jasne Błonia.
The next visiting-card of Szczecin, which arose at the turn of XIX and XX centuries is Chrobry Embankments. The main originator of rebuilding of fortress’ terrains was the then mayor Herman Haken. On the hills, which previously were functioning as typically defensive, had been raised the representative buildings /edifices/, surrounded by greenery. Presently, we can admire wonderful oaks growing along Zygmunta Starego and Szczerbcowej streets.
Extremely interesting and the biggest city’s cluster of greenery is Central Cemetery covering the area over 168 hectares. Its designers while selecting plants (415 kinds of trees and bushes) took advantage of natural terrain and microclimate conditions.
Forests in the city that is the next symbol, identification sign of Szczecin.
They cover almost 3 thousands of hectares. The biggest one among them is Arkoński Forest Park, popularly called Arkoński Forest. By the end of XIX century it was a common forest with normal forest paths. Thanks to support of Quistorp family by the end of XIX century the wild forest’s terrains had been ordered and transformed in suburban park.
Second forest park, considering the size, is Głębokie Forest Park. It covers the area of about 350 hectares. Similarly to Arkoński Forest it is overgrowed by mixed standing timbers. Bathing Beach of Głębokie is its main attraction
