The contract for the modernisation of the railway station
The President of Szczecin Piotr Krzystek signed a cooperation agreement with representatives of two railway companies: Jacek Prześluga, a member of the board of directors of the Polish State Railways SA, and Zbigniew Zarychta, a member of the board of directors of PKP Polish Railway Lines SA. The agreement concerns the modernisation of the Szczecin Główny station and its surroundings.
The plan assumes that the reconstruction of the railway station will be completed by 31.12.2014. The investment will be realised in stages and thanks to it the guests who will arrive for the final of The Tall Ships Races regatta in 2013 will benefit from the modernised facility.
Polish State Railways have applied for EU funds in order to co-finance the modernisation of the station. The EU funds within the project "The reconstruction of the Szczecin Główny station building, the railway transport system and the railway station square" amounts toPLN 122 million. This project was submitted for funding under the Infrastructure and Environment Programme, Priority VII, "Environment-friendly transport," action 7.1. "The development of rail transport."
A railway connection centre will be constructed in the vicinity of the Szczecin Metropolitan Area. The centre will integrate rail, auto, bus and tram transport.
The aim of the agreement is cooperation on the implementation and coordination of the redevelopment of the Szczecin Główny station in Szczecin. Traffic routes located on the land of the PKP Group will also be upgraded. Urban administration of the areas located in its vicinity will be amended. Kolumb Street will also be reconstructed.
