Szczecin and Bari like brothers
The Italian city of Bari is yet another partner city of Szczecin. A relevant agreement has been signed by the mayors of both cities – Piotr Krzystek and Michele Emiliano.
The event, which took place in the Szczecin City Council, was observed by a group of young people from Italy who study in Szczecin. They applauded the concluding of the agreement between Bari and the Capital of the Pomerania Region.
“Our cooperation has continued for many years now, and today we are crowning one of its stages, while at the same time opening another” said Piotr Krzystek, the Mayor of Szczecin.
The initiative for the collaboration with Bari, which dates back to 2001, originated in academic and cultural milieus.
-“We had no doubts as to whether enter into a partnership agreement” said Michele Emiliano, the Mayor of Bari, “not only do our young people gain knowledge, but also learn about the Polish culture. I wish to express my gratitude for the previous cooperation”.
In our voivodeship, this collaboration is being conducted by the University of Szczecin and the University of Bari within the framework of the Socrates Erasmus programme. As a result of undertaken activities, a Department of Italian Studies has been opened at the Theological Faculty of the University of Szczecin. Additionally, over the last years there has been greater focus on the training of language skills in schools and kindergartens, and many units have introduced courses in Italian.
